Insight into the Duchess Squad of KCL Lions

Sports Editor Laurence Key gives an insight into life within the Events Team at KCL Lions

During the KCL Boxing event, I met up with the Duchess Squad of the KCL Lions. I spoke to Yasmin Bumma-Dykes (Captain of Duchess – The Events Team), Eleanor Thomson (Coach), and Lydia Olika (Vice-Captain).

Duchess is the Events Team who cheers at the KCL Regents (American Football), KCL Rugby matches, and the KCL Boxing event. They will also be seen during the Varsity and Macadam events. They are a squad of 32 members strong with 50% of them have never taken part in this sport before taking girls who didn’t know how to tumble to someone that can.

I asked Yasmin, Eleanor, and Lydia individually why they enjoyed being a part of this great society. Yasmin loved the uniform and pom-poms as well as how diverse the squad is. Eleanor, who currently works in the City after having done her masters at KCL still comes back to coach this squad and stated how she loved coaching the girls and generating a big family amongst the girls whilst challenging the girls to help them achieve their best, balancing the skills of gymnastics with stunts (something that all the girls in the squad loved). Lydia stressed the camaraderie of the team and that this squad was more for fun.

The rest of the squad when asked why someone should join them stated how it had no competitive vibes, a great mix of dance and stunts, it allowed them to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds at King’s, it helped create great friendships, American Football boyfriends and it helped them to flex their BeReals.
