Diya Nadeem, a King’s College London student, has taken a bold step towards empowering underprivileged and discriminated against women in developing countries. Recognising the numerous challenges these women face in accessing education, healthcare, and other essential resources, Diya founded a charity with the aim of providing them with a sustainable means of income.
HelpingHer Ltd. aims to support marginalised women in developing countries by assessing women on a case-by-case basis. Using Diya’s current vast network in Pakistan, HelpingHer Ltd. provides women with utilities, resources and contacts in order to create a sustainable means of income. This reduces the amount of women dependent on others for a living and provides a long-term solution to poverty and discrimination against women.
Diya’s motivation to create HelpingHer Ltd. was inspired by personal experience. After visiting her parent’s home country – Pakistan – she witnessed the immense levels of poverty. Women were forced on the streets, alongside their children, to beg for money. Furthermore, after being exposed to stories of young children forced into marriage just to provide a source of income, it left a long-lasting effect on her. After all this, Diya was inspired to do her part to make a change.
After a long conversation with numerous individuals, Diya realised she had to create something of her own to truly make a change. Large NGOs fundraise extensive amounts of capital but the public is rarely shown where the money goes. Moreover, Diya realised that one-time donations towards individuals only provide a short-term solution, rather than a sustainable, long-term solution. HelpingHer Ltd. was designed in order to help women out of unwanted situations and allow them to become independent.
Taking advantage of her current network in Pakistan, she has reached out to women who are willing to work for themselves. Considering their respective talents and skills, HelpingHer Ltd. would provide them with resources, such as sewing machines, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies etc. Diya’s long-term aspirations for this charity is to expand HelpingHer’s reach beyond Pakistan and across as many developing countries as possible.
The expected impact of the charity founded by this King’s College London student cannot be overstated. By providing sustainable income-generating opportunities to underprivileged and discriminated women in developing countries, the charity is not only improving their lives but also creating a ripple effect in their communities. The stories of transformation and empowerment are a testament to the power of innovation, determination, and compassion in making a positive impact on the world. As the charity continues to grow and expand its reach, it serves as an inspiration to us all to take action towards creating a fairer and more equitable world.
