2022’s King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU) Spring Elections have come to a close, with 2nd year International Relations student Mohd Yasir Khan elected to the office of KCLSU President. A total of 1,819 valid votes were cast to determine the outcome.
In his manifesto, Mr Khan promises a university-wide campaign aiming to provide student volunteers with professional mentorship training, the re-introduction of an “alumni card” system for ex-King’s students, decolonisation of curricula, a new version of tuition fee instalments, and reduced rents at King’s College London (KCL) Residences. Mr Khan also aims to revise the assessment criteria for foundation course student applying to King’s, expand prayer spaces in libraries and “relatively isolated parts of our campuses”, challenge the UK government’s “Prevent” policy, and supply free sanitary pads in KCL buildings.
Mr Khan won the election with a final total of 778 votes in his favour, followed by candidate Julia Kosowska with 577 votes. In a statement to Roar, President-elect Khan told students: “Let me just start by giving a warm welcome to everyone as your new president-elect! I have no doubt that this will be the start of an exciting journey for KCL students transitioning back into normal life from the Covid-19 pandemic. I am eagerly looking forward to working with my new colleagues who have also worked tremendously hard in their respective campaigns. […] Thank you all for showing your confidence in me and electing me to this position of responsibility and most importantly representation.”
Four other student officers were successful in their bids for election this year: Shagun Bhandari in the role of VP Postgraduate, Martina Chen as VP Welfare & Community, Sara Osman Saeed as VP Education (Arts & Sciences), and Tejveer Singh Nag as VP Activities & Development. The role of VP Education (Health) was returned to the nominations stage, with 318 R.O.N. votes and no valid candidates for the position.
