Steve Carrell was a mail carrier; Brad Pitt was once the man behind the chicken costume of a fast-food chain, Jim Carrey a janitor. We all gotta do the time. There’s no shame in putting your 6 months at McDonalds on your CV, you did your time just like the rest of ‘em. If nothing else it shows you’re not some doe-eyed bumpkin that’s just skipped out of university with a degree scroll under your arm and a moater board-come-bonnet on your head. You know the score: team work, resilience, time-management…
More so than that it could be your golden ticket to a graduate job, no one’s turning their noses up now, hey? At an interview for a sales assistant job at Waitrose I was told that they would view a graduate application with shop-floor experience very favourably, wink wink nudge nudge. Or it may even come up trumps sooner than you think with that oh so yummy work experience application form. After all you can’t just put done ‘completed the cinnamon challenge’ as evidence of perseverance.
Sure, you probably won’t end up being a famous actor, living in LA with a hot tub in your kitchen but it’s worth a shot right? Well we’ve all gotta start somewhere. Yeah it’s September and you haven’t even bought your course books yet (man, we have to pay for that as well?!) but graduating will come round faster than you can say, “LONDON I LOVE YOU!†And it’s a dark ol’ world out there. So get yourself a pretty little reference from a part-time job and maybe you won’t be dragged kicking and screaming back to the middle of nowhere. Plus, London living doesn’t come cheap, that extra 30 quid a week will pay for a Tesco shop or two. That’s right you can finally afford to put some chicken in your curry.
