Sports Editor Joel Lim covers the Varsity squash game at Southbank Squash Club

KCL Squash takes on UCL Squash in a highly anticipated match-up. Despite a heartbreaking loss last year by both the Men’s and Women’s teams, the Reds look to reverse history and snatch the title away from UCL this year!

In the second-ever edition of Squash Varsity, the teams look to fight tooth-and-nail for the Squash Varsity title. Both teams have brought out their top players (10 from the Men’s team and 5 from the Women’s team) and are ready to put their intense training to the test! The players will be matched based on experience and skill level, ensuring that every match will be a hugely competitive one!

12-3 UCL

Youseff (KCL) vs Sam (UCL). In the most anticipated match of the day, King’s star player Youseff caps off the day with a dominant 3-0 win. What a final few games by KCL!

12-2 UCL

Rana (KCL) vs Antoine (UCL). In what was highly competitive game, Antonie takes the victory over Rana in a 3-0 win.

11-2 UCL

Arman (KCL) vs Adam (UCL). KCL Squash’s Men’s 1 captain, Arman takes the game 3-2! An epic finish to a close and exhilirating game. Come on King’s!

11-1 UCL

Ollie (KCL) vs Manny (UCL). The King’s team still has not lost heart, as Ollie is putting a great show against Manny! Both players fought tooth and nail for this win, with the game ending in Manny’s favour (3-2)! What a game, fantastic work to both players!

Shahmeer (KCL) vs Lucas (UCL). Lucas takes the game 3-1! In a competition bout, Lucas showcases his talent and great experience in an impressive win over Shahmeer!

9-1 UCL

Sharessa vs Inaayat. Inaayat takes the game 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-9)! What a win!

8-1 UCL

Satarra (KCL) vs Rui En (UCL). KCL takes their first game! In a game that ended 3-1, Satarra brings her A game to the court, taking down her skilled opponent Rui En. Doing so in great style, she walked off the court beaming with excitement and pride, as her teammates surrounded her with animated cheers and hurrahs! What a win!

8-0 UCL

Joe (KCL) vs Ben (UCL). In one of the tightest games of the day, Ben takes the game 3-2 with the final game ending 12-10. Both competitors were virtually equally matched, as they gave every single point their absolute all!

7-0 UCL

Ludo (KCL) vs Ahab (UCL). Ahab from UCL takes the game 3-0. Despite the scoreline, this was a hugely intense game, as both sides showed their flair on the court. Ludo brought style to the game, epitomised by his masterful between the leg shot, while Ahab impressed with his consistency.

After the game, Ludo, the soon to be captain, mentioned that he was proud of his performance, stating that he thought he ‘did well, though he could’ve been more consistent tactically’. Overall, still a great performance and showing!

Game 6

6-0 UCL

Paige (KCL) vs Isabelle (UCL). Isabelle from UCL takes the game 3-1.

Game 5

5-0 UCL

James (KCL) vs Franky (UCL). Franky from UCL takes the game (6-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4). James showed off his skill in his first Varisty with a strong opening two games with his fantastic drop shots. However, his endurance came to hunt him as his opponent Franky’s endurance came to his advantage. Overall, still a fantastic game! As James puts it, ‘exhausting but great match with a great competitor!’

Johanna (KCL) vs Marialena (UCL). Marialena from UCL takes the game 3-0, in a tightly contested fight that saw two 14-12 games. The games have been entertaining and exciting, drawin crowds of supporters to cheer the atheletes on.

Oscar (KCL) vs Zayaan (UCL). Zayaan from UCL takes the game.

Mitzi (KCL) vs Jasmine (UCL). Mitzi from UCL takes the game.

Game 1

AJ (KCL) vs Philip (UCL)

AJ faces off against Philip in a tight contest, eventually losing after a concerted effort. In his first Varisty, he faced off against equally matched Philip in the 10th seed match-up, eventually losing 3-0.

The game started off with AJ attempting to catch Philip out with his reverse boast. However, this did not work out as the game continued, as his strategy got predictable. Eventually Philip took the edge with his drives and AJ’s mistakes. 1-0 UCL!

Squad Lineup

The Reds are getting ready for their big showdown against UCL. The Men’s team look to dominate their fixtures, led by in-form player Youseff. From the Men’s team, look out for Arman and Ludo (first-team), who have had stellar performances this season. For the Women’s team, look out for the final 2 fixtures, as experienced players Satarra and Sharessa look to tough it out in a highly anticipated battle.
