Sports Editor Joel Lim provides live updates on the annual KCLFC vs QMFC charity match.

The annual mixed charity football match is finally here! KCL Women’s and Men’s Football Club face off against Queen Mary Women’s and Men’s Football Club in what is a highly anticipated friendly match.

Hosted at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Stadium, all proceeds from this match will be donated to the UN High Commission for Refugees. This year’s charity match follows a hugely successful first rendition last December, where both teams managed to raise over £4,000 for the cause.

The match will kick off at 8:30pm on Wednesday 22 October.

Roar will be providing live updates here throughout the match.

Final Whistle Blown: QMFC 2 – KCLFC 1

The referee finally blows his whistle. In what was a tight but exhilarating match, KCLFC showed grit and enthusiasm but was ultimately unable to overcome the incessant attacks by QMFC. However, the match made for an incredibly fun and interesting watch! All credits go to both teams for organising such a wonderful event for a great cause!

85′

QMFC Increases their Tempo

Following the Lion’s goal, Queen Mary has gathered themselves and have taken control of the match. Their long balls over the top continues to threaten Kings as the Reds desperately look to find an equalising goal

68′

KCLFC Free Kick

Kings wins a free kick 15 yards from the penalty box. They attempt to cross it to the far post but are unable to find any of their people.

65′

KCLFC on the Attack

King’s number 3 pings a ball from his own half to their number 2. He proceeds to cross the ball to the Red’s striker who is clear on goal. He pulls off a decent shot, but is met by an impressive save by the Blue’s keeper.

60′

Goal!!! KCLFC Puts One in the Net!

The Red’s incessant pestering of Queen Mary’s defence has finally paid off! King’s winger cuts in from the wing and takes a grounded shot from the left corner of the penalty box, placing the ball perfectly past Queen Mary’s keeper into the bottom right corner. The score is now 2-1!

KCLFC Dominates Early On in the Second Half

KCLFC seems to have found their stride in the game. They seem much smoother and coordinated, as they manage to string together pass after pass. Whatever was said in the locker room must have really resonated with the team as they seem to have changed their approach to the game – focusing more on stringing together short passes and retaining possession.

47′

Shot on Target!

King’s goalkeeper pulls off a comfortable save as the Blues attempt a shot on target. The second half has started off well!

45′

Resumption of the Second Half

We are well and back under way. KCLFC opens the game with great energy and enthusiasm, which will hopefully translate into goals for them in the near future!

Half-time

Half-time Show

This year’s charity match’s half-time show features both QM’s cheer team and KCL’s Duchesses. Decked in all black, the Queen Mary Angels take the stage with a dazzling display of pom-poms, chants and well coordinated dance moves. The Duchesses then follow this up with a performance befitting of the occasion, starting off with a classy V-shaped formation and ending their showcase with a memorable dazzle of harmonised moves.

45′

Half-time

The first half ends with QMFC 2-0 up. The blue’s dominant performance thus far has kept King’s defence busy as they pepper the Red’s penalty box with cross after cross. King’s will look to get their forwards more into the game, as their midfield has struggled to transition the ball into Queen Mary’s half. We anticipate in excitement the start of the second half of the game – will the Blues continue with their dominant performance, or will the Red’s pull off an unforgettable comeback?

43′

Goal!! QMFC up 2-0

QMFC’s number 2 skilfully dribbles through the wall of red defenders into the penalty box. He gathers his breath and delivers a potent shot into the bottom left corner of the King’s goal, with the Red’s goalkeeper wrong footed and unable to save the shot.

37′

QMFC Shot

QMFC’s number 2 dribbles through the tightly knit King’s defence but only masters a shot on target. The score stays at 1-0!

30′

KCLFC Wins a Corner

KCLFC wins a corner, the first of the game. The ball lands squarely at the feet of number 14, who shots the ball directly at the keeper.

20′

QMFC Puts on the Pressure

QMFC has been on the front foot for the past five minutes as KCLFC sustains wave after wave of attack from the Blues. Their main weapon of attack seems to be their crosses, which have been frequent but inaccurate.

15′

Goal!!

QMFC opens the game up with a beautifully crafted team goal. 1-0 to the Blues!

13′

Off the post!

KCLFC wins a throw-in in a dangerous spot. The throw-in goes to KCL’s number 10 at the tip of the penalty box, who smoothly cuts the ball in for a shot attempt that clinks off the post, the match is now officially well and under way!

5′

Scrappy Opening 5 Minutes

The game opens scrappily, as both teams exchange by fouls and tackles. Interestingly, they have both opted for a 3-5-2 lineup, which promises, with possession being fairly evenly split.
