Staff writers Polly Symes and Hetal Mehta sum up a glorious victory for GKT Women’s Football on Day 4 of Varsity 2025.
On Tuesday afternoon, the GKT Women’s 1st team played against RUMS Women’s 1st team in the 2025 Medic’s Football Varsity, coming out with a brilliant 7-0 victory! This added some much-needed points towards the Varsity championship against UCL.
The match, held at Tooting and Mitcham United Football Club, had a brilliant turnout, with the number of GKT fans easily tripled the number of RUMS fans present in the stands. GKT outdid RUMS not just in numbers but also in style – it was clear that GKTWFC fans took sign-painting very seriously!
Weather-wise, the team was lucky, playing most of their game in the daylight, and avoiding the light smattering of drizzle that later hit the men’s GKT team.
The first goal of the match was scored by the team’s leading scorer, Maddie Abreu, on a penalty. Abreu later scored three more goals, making her total more than a hattrick – impressive work. Other goal scorers were Bex Nagedote (known as American Bex), and Bex Alderton (Captain Bex).
By half-time it was pretty clear that GKTWFC would win the game, having already secured a 5-0 lead. In the second half, despite the team being almost guaranteed a victory, they pushed ahead and secured another two goals.

Amidst the post-win frenzy, Roar managed to catch up with a few of the players.
Amy Davis, right-wing back, said that her highlight of the game had been when Abreu scored the first goal, as it ‘set the scene for the rest of the match and the win’. Meanwhile, Vice Captain and left back Abby Musselwhite commented that her best moment had been ‘the final whistle’, affirming that she was very proud to win her final match at university. Finally, Sarah Mohar, the goalie who (luckily) didn’t have to see much action said that her favourite part of the match was that ‘I didn’t have to do anything!’.
In terms of star players, Lois Konan (central attacking midfielder), Noami Cooper-Jones (right wing) and Sarah Kerich collectively stated that Abreu, the top-goal-scorer of the game, was their ‘woman of the match’. For goalkeeper Mohar, Hetty Hill stood out for her work in midfield, at the back, and at the front; ‘amazing’, Mohar gushed. Meanwhile, Esther Harlow, centre-back (and left back at times) commented that all team members played exceptionally well, but singled out Lois Konan for playing for the whole duration of the game.
After the match, GKTWFC celebrated their win with a very well deserved portion of burgers and chips whilst cheering on the (also victorious) GKT men’s team, before heading to Guy’s Bar for post-match celebrations.
Having won both Varsity and their BUCS league last week, it is clear that GKTWC have had a brilliant season, and will hope to bring this energy forward into the next year.
Well done on an incredible win, GKTWFC!
