Staff Writer Mina Yasar dissects elements of old money fashion aesthetic and shares styling tips for people who would like to create old money looks.
There are many ways to create outfits inspired by ‘the old money aesthetic’. The options are endless. In order to give this sense in your outfits, I will give a sense of what this aesthetic means for me and some of its core elements below.
CREATING A BALANCE BETWEEN PERSONAL STYLE AND TRENDS
Every season, there are fashion trends which comes into our wardrobes and to our social media feeds. When an aesthetic becomes a trend in the fashion world, it starts to be part of the many social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Youtube.
However, while it could be interesting to follow some of the fashion trends and use elements of those in our daily outfits.I think it is also interesting to have a personal style that makes us feel good about ourselves. There are many fashion aesthetics which a person could prefer to use in the outfits. Let’s have a look at ‘Old Money Aesthetic’.

COMBINING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE AND OLD MONEY AESTHETICS
The ‘old money aesthetic’ is known as the complete opposite of the ‘streetwear aesthetic’. It is generally defined like this in the fashion world. However, I am not a huge fan of the strict opposition of aesthetics. Maintaining a personal style is good, it is also interesting to change your outfits from your regular-self and have different outfits from different aesthetics.
STYLE TIPS: HOW TO USE CLOTHING ITEMS
Polo t-shirts, black dresses, trench coats and blazers are some of the most used clothing items in this aesthetic. Of course, you could use those clothing items in many other aesthetics. However, the way you style them are some of the features is what gives them a sense of ‘old money aesthetic’.

UNDERSTANDING COLOUR COMBINATIONS : KEY COLOURS AND MONOCHROME LOOKS
Natural and simple colour palettes are used in this aesthetic. The most commonly used colours are beige, white, grey, black and navy blue. Printed patterns are not very much used. So, if you are trying to recreate classic old money looks, you should not use printed designs like animal print. However, if you want to add your touch to the outfit, you are also welcome to add a part of your style and create an innovative look.
Monochrome outfits are part of this aesthetic, especially full white or full beige looks. While creating a full black outfit, it is essential to not use faux-fur or animal print since it could distance itself from ‘old money aesthetic’ and creates an outfit inspired from ‘mob wife aesthetic‘.
If you don’t prefer to have a full white or full navy blue outfits, you could use black or brown in your belt and shoes and bags to have a little bit of another colour.
It is also good to note that having black and white combinations in your outfits or having a monochrome white look with brown details are some of the signature looks of this aesthetic.
Another option is to have at least two colours in your outfits. You can use these colour combinations; black and white, navy blue and white, navy blue and light brown, grey and black, grey and dark brown or grey and black.
HOW TO CREATE MORE PERSONALISED OR COLOURFUL OUTFITS?
It is also possible to change the aesthetic’s classic looks and add a bit of your soul by creating more colourful outfits. My advice would be to use monochrome looks in different shades of orange, yellow, and dark purple while creating old money looks.
Cardigans, shirts and blazers are essential, especially polo shirts. Outerwear is important part of this aesthetic, especially in fall and winter. Cable-knit jumpers are essentials. Shirt-dresses are some of the most used dress types in this aesthetic.

STYLE TIPS: V-NECK CARDIGANS, TRENCH COATS AND LOAFERS
If you prefer pants instead of dresses you shouldn’t use sport tights which could create an athlesiure aesthetic look. You should also stay away from faux-leather biker tights.
While wearing a white shirt with a white pant and brown belt, don’t be afraid to add a wool blazer or a waistcoat to your outfit. Instead of puffers, it is essential to use coats in this aesthetic.
If you prefer skirts, you could wear a black, navy blue or dark green mini or midi -skirt with a white v-neck jumper and put a trench coat over it. I also like to have a mini red skirt and combine it with a black v -neck cardigan and a black trench coat and loafers.
Wide-leg trousers or straight leg trousers could be an interesting choice. However, I like to add my personal style to the aesthetic. This could be controversial since are jeans not mainly part of this aesthetic. However I like to add jeans to the aesthetic especially blue or white jeans and use it with , polo or v neck- tshirts, blazers, coats, loafers.
FOOTWEAR AND BAGS: AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE OLD MONEY AESTHETIC
In terms of footwear; I think that it could be good to stay away from trainers designed especially for the purpose of exercising or running. Instead of that you could use riding boots, loafers, or if you need comfort you could use faux-suede trainers preferably black or brown. If you like to wear heels, my preference would be kitten heels instead of sandals.
Bags are important in this aesthetic since multiple jewellery or a piece of statement jewellery is not part of this aesthetic. However, if you feel like more yourself with some of your necklaces, ear-cuffs or any other accessories you like you could use it. By this way you can create your version of the old money aesthetic.
In most of my old money aesthetic outfits I prefer black, brown or sometimes grey bags preferably shoulder bags or a small tote. In terms of sunglasses you could use black, brown or white sunglasses but it shouldn’t be very big.
HAVING A SOFT MAKEUP IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE AESTHETIC
Make-up is also important – in this aesthetic stay away from smokey eyes, cat eyes to fit the aesthetic. A nude lipstick or a soft pink will fit this look or you could use light brown. Your nails also add to the look – white nails are best for this aesthetic.
NEED MORE INSPIRATION?
There are many brands and boutiques you could find clothing items which will help you create old money looks. However, in order to have inspiration you could also look at to some of the fashion brands which creates famous looks in this aesthetic like Loro Piana.
