The ultimate guide to London Varsity 2015: Day 3 – Lacrosse

(North London Cricket Club, 12pm, £5 Students/£7 Non-Students)

THE London Varsity Series is set to move on to Day 3 today as UCL and King’s head to the North London Cricket Club for the Lacrosse event.

Lacrosse is the first of five new sports making its debut at the 2015 London Varsity tournament when it kicks off the action on Sunday afternoon.

The sport, which has its origins in North America, is enjoying growing popularity within the UK and will have the chance to win new followers at this year’s London Varsity.

Roar will be covering every event live on its Twitter feed so you can keep up to date with all the action.

Lacrosse is not only new to Varsity, this season has been the debut season for the King’s Men’s side competing in the BUCS Lacrosse leagues, and only UCL Men’s second year.

In the Women’s game it more established, with both women’s teams having been in the league system since 2004. Now both sets of sides will be eagerly anticipating playing under the Varsity spotlight.

Men’s Lacrosse

KCL (Recent Form: LLWWL): In their debut system in the BUCS system KCL Men’s have adapted well to life in BUCS South Eastern Division 2B and sit in fourth place in the league having only lost three of their first seven matches. They also made it through to the Quater Finals of the South Eastern Conference Cup before losing to Royal Holloway.

UCL (Recent Form: WLWWL): UCL Men’s have taken the BUCS League system by storm since joining last season. In their debut season they finished top of the league and won promotion from South Eastern Division 2A and this season have secured back-to-back promotions after finishing top of South Eastern Division 1A.

Women’s Lacrosse

KCL (Recent Form: LLLWL): This season has seen the KCL women struggle to build on their third place finish in BUCS South Eastern Division 1A in 2014, and currently they sit second bottom in the relegation zone with only one game to be played. This hasn’t been helped by their first round cup exit in November to Warwick.

Captain: Sarah Henshaw, 2nd Year, Neuroscience.

How has your season gone so far? This season has been one of many tough matches but due to the competitiveness we’ve played to a great standard of lacrosse and had a lot of fun doing it.

How excited do you feel about the chance to captain your side at Varsity? I’m definitely feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement in the lead up to varsity. Obviously it would be great to pull out a win since this is the first year lacrosse has been included in the varsity lineup and it would be the cherry on top to be captain if that happens.

How do you rate your chances of Varsity success? I think with the team we’re putting out we’ve got a great chance, it will definitely be a close game though. We play UCL quite regularly in women’s and mixed so I’m sure it will be a great atmosphere on the day and fingers crossed for the win!

Win of the season: 10-1 vs. Kingston. The side exercised their dominance in their biggest league win of the season over relegation rivals Kingston, with every player having a shot on goal. On the victory, captain, Henshaw, stated; ‘After gaining so many great new players this year it was probably the first time that we really came together as a team’.

Player to watch: Alexandra Miller has come through into the side as a fresher and developed into a key member of the squad. Vital to any attack or defence play, Miller never stops running and has been enjoyable to watch due to her form so far this season.

UCL (Recent Form: LWWWW): UCL Women’s only just missed out on promotion from BUCS South Eastern Division 1A last season after finishing top of the league and then losing in the playoffs. This season they have come a comfortable second place in the league and will be eyeing up playoff success to avenge last year’s disappointment.
