‘Your Party’ emerges at King’s seeking to realign the student left

A new student group says it will seek King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU) ratification as the national “Your Party” project gathers momentum and rival factions jostle for space on campus.

A student group named ‘Your Party KCL’ has announced its arrival at King’s College London and says it will seek ratification from KCLSU.

Roar understands that the group is seeking national affiliation and expects to outline event details during semester one.

The organisers describe the project as “a society for the many, not the few” – a line echoing a former Labour Party slogan.

In their first posts, the group invited students to sign up via a Linktree and join campus discussions, with its Instagram surpassing 100 followers within the first few days.

Roar has been told the group currently presents itself as “a group of students” and has declined to name individual organisers, saying a committee is being assembled.

The society says it aims to collaborate with existing KCL societies during the coming academic year as it builds towards ratification.

Sources close to the group told Roar it intends to submit an application to KCLSU in the 2025/26 academic year, with a view to ratification in 2026/27 – an unusually long path for a fledgling campus group.

In a statement to Roar, the organisers argue that Labour’s shift to the centre since entering government has left some students “politically homeless” and say they want to create “a space for discussion, debate and community that welcomes everyone”.

“Since Labour entered government last July, the party has drifted further towards the centre. For many of us, this shift has created a gap within the left, leaving many students to feel politically homeless.

Our group exists to fill that gap. We are building a space for discussion, debate and community that welcomes everyone, no matter political experience or background.

We believe that people deserve a new kind of representation, one that listens to the many, not the few, and addresses the real-world problems so many of us face daily”.

They add that they are beginning formal affiliation with the national Your Party project, operating independently at King’s for now, and say they have received an endorsement from the University College London (UCL) Your Party society.

When approached for comment, the KCL Labour Society offered a cautious welcome:

“Whilst we welcome more discussion and political choice for students at KCL, we maintain that the Labour Party maintains the best forum for social democratic politics at KCL.

The Labour Party has the ability to genuinely deliver on our social democratic principles. The best way to shape the direction of the left at King’s is – and will continue to be – through the Labour Party”.

The launch comes amid a national changing of the guard on the left of British politics. ‘Your Party’ is the working name of a new political project fronted by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, unveiled on 24 July.

Backers say members will determine the final name and programme at an autumn conference. A legal shell, Your Party UK Ltd, was registered at Companies House on 31 July.

Meanwhile, UCL’s Your Party society has said it has submitted its ratification application and has named a president on Instagram, signalling a broader push to formalise student political fringe groups.

On the right, Reform UK societies have appeared at several universities, including Exeter and York – though King’s has yet to see a Reform society launch.

For now, ‘Your Party KCL’ says it will build support, co-host events, and encourage sign-ups via its Linktree while it works towards ratification.
