The Highly Cited Researcher 2025 List by Clarivate includes 26 researchers that work at, or are affiliated with, King’s College London (KCL). Staff Writer Lavanya Mahendrakumar reflects on the implications of these awards.

Highly Cited researchers are those that over the last 11 years, have published multiple papers that are in the top one percent of citations for their field and publication year.

Apart from being chosen due to citation number, these researchers are also selected as they demonstrate exceptional practices and integrity when carrying out and publishing their research and are making disproportionately huge impacts in their field. This year 7,131 awards have been given to 6,868 researchers from 60 countries.

“I am extremely honoured and incredibly proud to have been listed as Highly Cited Researcher for the fifth year in a row. I think it is important to acknowledge that all the publications that are highly cited are the result of incredible team work and scientific collaborations developed over the years. I think it is important to highlight the contribution of the fantastic people I work with, including everyone in my laboratory and who made this achievement possible.”

Valeria Mondelli, Clinical Professor of Psychoneuroimmunology

Of the 26 Highly Cited researchers from KCL, 19 are from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). These are:

The remaining seven researchers are:

“The list represents the multidisciplinarity of the IoPPN – there are researchers working on a variety of themes and issues using vastly different methods – the list cannot capture the breadth of the work the IoPPN is doing. It’s important to emphasise that behind every Highly Cited Researcher, there’s always a team of people working together, with collaboration across people and researchers that brings the work to the forefront internationally. The list really demonstrates the power of multidisciplinarity both within an institution and within the individual’s portfolio of research.”

Carmine Pariante, Professor of Biological Psychiatry

Such a large number of Highly Cited Researchers at KCL represents a culture of quality, integrity and innovation in research. Achievements like this point to the need for a future filled with collaborative and cross-disciplinary studies into various fields.

As these researchers continue to push boundaries in their respective fields, they also help shape and inspire the next generation of researchers to come.
