News Editor Matthew Pellow reports on the KCL Rugby egging event for a Movember charity drive.
On 22 November, King’s College London Rugby Football Club (KCLRFC) hosted a charity egging event outside Bush House, raising money for charity. They also live-streamed the event on their Instagram.
The event was hosted as part of KCLRFC’s charity drive for Movember (a men’s health charity), for which several members of the society are also growing out their facial hair to raise money. In addition to being egged by passersby, participants have been actively promoting awareness about men’s health issues, encouraging donations and sharing their personal fundraising journeys on their Instagram story.
Movember was founded in Australia in 2003, with the stated aim of “changing the face of men’s health”. The charity raises money for three main causes: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. In addition, it seeks to encourage men to lead healthier lives, through an emphasis on physical activity and more open conversation with friends about their mental health.
Participants in Movember, known as Mo Bros, have raised over £400 million globally since the charity’s foundation. The charity has funded over 1,320 men’s health projects across the world, including the work of Prostate Cancer UK.
As of publication, KCLRFC has raised £626 of a target of £750 in their Movember campaign.
James Purcell, Charity and Kit Secretary of KCLRFC told Roar:
“Every year we strive to maximise awareness about an issue that many men face – men’s mental health. In many parts of society, it is engrained for people to hold back expressing their feelings and emotions and as a result they simply stir and lead to further issues such as depression and anxiety. Every minute, a man takes his own life, not only leaving behind those he loves but all the opportunities he could have had. We as KCLRFC are trying to stimulate as much awareness about this issue and support for the Movember charitable campaign. We hope this will help more men to get the support they need, making a man’s life something more than just a statistic.”
