Macadam Building Renovations Completed Just in Time for Michaelmas Term

King’s Estates & Facilities has announced completion of the refurbishment of the first, fourth, and fourth floor mezzanine of the Macadam Building just in time for the beginning of classes this week. 

Rob Neobard, the Project Manager heading up the Macadam Building programme, said: “The relocation of several of the Macadam’s key functions to Bush House has provided us with an opportunity to reappraise what the building is used for, and ensure that we’re making the most of the space we have available to us.”

The first floor, previously the Careers & Employability office, has been converted into additional teaching space, with three 40-seat classrooms and four group study areas.

The fourth floor, previously home to Tutu’s, a nightclub run by the KCLSU that in the past few years has sat largely vacant as an events space, is now a 100-seat lecture theatre with easy conversion into a performance theatre. Additional features include a breakout and study area.

The fourth floor mezzanine, previously home to the student media suite, has also been converted into teaching space. A disabled persons lift has been implemented to bring building standards up-to-date.

A second phase due for completion in January will add Engineering teaching space to floor minus two, previously KCLSU reception, and a research laboratory to minus four. Additional projects, including plans for the former location of Waterfront Bar, are still in early planning stages and have yet to be announced. In the meantime, The Terrace remains open, as do the -3 music practice rooms.
