London Varsity Series 2020 Previews: THURSDAY

The 2020 London Varsity Series is fast approaching and in anticipation of a special one-off Varsity edition of Roar News, we’ll be publishing our previews online to get you ready for what promises to be an exciting Varsity.

GKT Women’s Football

Alfie Wilson

Don’t miss out on watching GKT WFC, a side drowning in silverware over recent years – including the illustrious title of 2017 national (yes, national) medical school champions, UH cup winners in 2019 and, most importantly, an 11-0 (yes, eleven) drubbing of their RUMS counterparts in last year’s edition. Similarly to the men’s team, they have consistently performed very well in BUCS and LUSL leagues, and in other tournaments throughout the year. Despite this continued success, a win for GKT WFC here would, to a degree, avenge the pain of losing last year’s national medical school’s final. They just have to go out there and perform at their best and another emphatic varsity win should be on the cards.

GKT Men’s Football

Alfie Wilson

GKT FC are perhaps the finest football club in the world (admittedly coming from a member of the team), but they’ll be sure to prove it once and for all in medics’ Men’s Football on Wednesday at Haringey FC, where the first team will take on the RUMS first team in the fiercest match in all of London. After running out 3-0 winners in last year’s game, the new additions to GKT 1s made since September have only improved the outfit, notably Johannes Jensen between the sticks. For surefire wednesday night excitement on what could be a pivotal day in this year’s varsity series, be sure to go down and support the boys in navy and gold. In the eyes.

GKT Netball

Louis Jacques

Varsity winners for four years running, GKT Netball are a force to be reckoned with. Their winning squad has seen very little change this season and they have consistently gone from strength to strength – topping BUCS, LUSL and NAMS with a 400+ goal difference across all three. The team shows no sign of stopping in knockout competitions either, working towards yet another LUSL cup win and already in the NAMS final. It’ll be the last Varsity showing for over half the squad, so a win is a must and a high-scoring affair is guaranteed.

Women’s Rugby

Aisling Madden

KCLWRFC are currently having their best season to date, sitting joint 1st in BUCS 1A and are in prime position to maintain the LUSL title won last season. They are gunning to reclaim their varsity title after narrowly losing out last year in the Varsity curtain call, having previously been crowned champions in 2016, 2017 and 2018. This squad has a great mix of new and experienced players, who play an exciting brand of rugby, and will be sure to bring the points home for KCL come the big night.

Men’s Rugby

Louis Jacques

Four years on from the oh-so-sweet Varsity triumph which cemented a first silver trophy for the Strand, Varsity has brought not much more than pain for Men’s Rugby. UCL snatched the game and, in turn, the series with a single try at the death in 2018, before going one better and getting their team banned and disaffiliated last year, leaving our boys in red-and-blue helpless and on the sidelines last year. While their UCL counterparts are still banned, the RUMS first team will step up to the challenge instead this year – with just as much at stake. Now the feature Thursday game, a King’s team much improved from previous years will look to steal rightful glory under the floodlights – banking on their juggernaut defense to tip the scales. This one promises to be an all-time classic.
